Staying in Grindelwald: the short version
Grindelwald is a spread-out village at 1,050 metres, with around 8,000 guest beds and 4,318 residents. It has two main transport hubs: the village centre around the train station, close to the First gondola, and the Grindelwald Terminal further down in Grund, where the Eiger Express and the Männlichen gondola start.
Where you stay matters less than in many resorts, because local buses connect all parts of the village and they are free with the guest card. Still, a bed near the cable car you plan to use most saves time every morning. If you come by car, check parking before you book.

The best areas to stay in Grindelwald
Three parts of the village, each with a different balance of convenience and quiet.
Village centre near the station
The most convenient choice for a first visit. The Berner Oberland-Bahn from Interlaken Ost arrives here, and the valley station of the First gondola is about 8 to 10 minutes on foot. Shops, restaurants and the bus stops are all close by. Expect more traffic and more people in summer.
Grindelwald First →Grindelwald Grund and the Terminal
Best if your plans centre on the Jungfraujoch, Männlichen or skiing in the Grindelwald-Wengen area. The Grindelwald Terminal (937 m) has its own train station, the Eiger Express, the Männlichen gondola, ski depots and lockers. The Wengernalpbahn to Kleine Scheidegg also stops in Grund.
Männlichen →Quieter outskirts
Chalets and holiday flats on the slopes around the village, or towards the Pfingstegg cable car and the Glacier Canyon on the southern side. You get more peace and often better views, but you depend on the bus or a car. Check the walking distance to the nearest stop.
Pfingstegg →Grindelwald tours and activities
Cable car tickets, guided hikes, day trips and winter activities you can book for your stay, with live prices and availability.

Which area suits which trip
A quick comparison to match your base to your plans.
| Area | Closest cable cars | Getting around | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Village centre | First (8 to 10 min walk) | train station, local buses, shops | first visits, travellers without a car, the Bachalpsee and First |
| Grund / Terminal | Eiger Express, Männlichen | Terminal station, Wengernalpbahn in Grund, large car park | Jungfraujoch, Eiger Trail, Männlichen, skiing |
| Outskirts | depends on location, Pfingstegg on the southern edge | local and mountain buses, car | families in chalets, longer stays, quiet evenings |
Hotels or chalets and holiday flats?
Grindelwald has both in large numbers, from small family-run guesthouses to larger hotels in the centre, and from studio flats to whole chalets on the slopes.
Hotels suit short stays of two to four nights. You do not need to cook, reception can help with tickets and weather questions, and many are in the centre or close to a cable car.
Chalets and holiday flats make sense for families, groups and stays of a week or more. A kitchen saves money in an expensive country, and you get more space. Before you book, check the minimum stay, any cleaning fee, whether bed linen is included and how far it is to the next bus stop.
Whatever you choose, make sure the place registers you for the guest card. Overnight guests receive it from their accommodation.

Parking in Grindelwald
Grindelwald is reachable by road, unlike car-free Wengen and Mürren, but parking in the village is limited. Ask your accommodation whether a space is included before you book.
Grindelwald Terminal
1,032 spaces, open around the clock all year. CHF 15 for 2 to 24 hours, with different rates after that. Booking online costs CHF 5 extra. 20 charging points for electric cars.
Eiger+ car park
Near the train station and recommended for First. 164 spaces, CHF 20 for 8 hours, maximum stay 30 days.
Park and ride
Grindelwald Tourism recommends P+R Matten, P+R Wilderswil or the Terminal. In summer, buses run into the village every 15 minutes.
Getting to Grindelwald →When to book
Demand is highest from late June to September, when all cable cars run and the high trails are free of snow, and during the winter high season. The ski pass high season in 2026/27 runs from 19 December to 3 January and from 30 January to 28 February, and you should expect these weeks to be busy in the village as well. Book early for these periods, especially for chalets and flats sleeping larger groups.
From mid-October to mid-December, many mountain huts and hotels close, and most cable cars stop for revision. In 2026, First is closed from 26 October to 27 November and Männlichen until 11 December. This is the quietest time of the year, with fewer options in the village and little to do in the mountains.
Grindelwald, Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen?
Many visitors weigh Grindelwald against other bases in the Jungfrau Region. A short overview.
| Base | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Grindelwald | right below the Eiger, three cable car areas from the village, reachable by car | daily trips to the lakes and Interlaken take longer |
| Interlaken | central for trains, lakes and day trips in all directions | 36 minutes by train to Grindelwald, every cable car day starts with a train ride |
| Lauterbrunnen and Wengen | the other side of the Jungfrau, Wengen is car-free and linked to Männlichen by cable car | further from First, Wengen cannot be reached by car |
If your focus is hiking at First, Männlichen and the Eiger, Grindelwald is the most practical base. If you want to combine many different regions, Interlaken can make sense.

Where to stay in Grindelwald: frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Grindelwald?
For a first visit, the village centre near the train station is the most practical: the First gondola is a short walk away and buses leave from here. If you plan to go to the Jungfraujoch or Männlichen often, the area around the Grindelwald Terminal in Grund is a good alternative.
Is it better to stay in Grindelwald or Interlaken?
For hiking and mountain views, Grindelwald, because you start each day right at the cable cars. Interlaken is better if you want to visit many places across Switzerland. The train between them takes 36 minutes.

Yes. Every overnight guest gets it from their accommodation. Local buses are free, and First, Pfingstegg and, in summer, Männlichen are discounted.
Where can I park when staying in Grindelwald?
Ask your accommodation first. Public options are the Grindelwald Terminal car park (CHF 15 for 2 to 24 hours) and the Eiger+ car park near the station (CHF 20 for 8 hours, up to 30 days).

From late October to early December. Many hotels and huts close then, and most cable cars are closed for maintenance, so the choice of things to do is limited.
