The Glacier Canyon at a glance
The Grindelwald Glacier Canyon is one of the few sights in the valley that needs no cable car. It lies just outside the village, where the Lütschine river runs through a deep gorge. A walkway takes you about one kilometre into it, with rock walls rising around 300 metres above you.
You walk in and come back the same way, so the full visit is roughly two kilometres. Most people need one to two hours, including the Spiderweb net and the small crystal museum at the exit. It is a good choice for a short day, a day when clouds hide the peaks, or an afternoon after a morning on the mountain.

The walkway and the Spiderweb
Two things make the canyon different from a normal gorge walk: how close the walkway runs to the water, and the net strung above it.
The walkway
The path follows the gorge for about one kilometre, and you need no special equipment or experience. At the far end you turn around and walk back the same way, which gives you a second look at the rock from the other direction.
The Spiderweb
Near the walkway, a large net of 170 square metres hangs seven metres above the Lütschine. You can walk on it without a harness or any other gear. Entry to the net is included in the canyon ticket, so there is nothing extra to pay.
The crystal museum
At the exit you pass a small crystal museum. It is included in the ticket and does not take long, so it is easy to add on the way out.
The canyon swing
A giant rope swing also operates inside the gorge. It is a separate adventure activity, booked as its own tour, and not part of a normal canyon visit. You may hear shouts echoing off the walls while you walk.

Season and opening hours
The Glacier Canyon is open from late April or May to November, depending on the weather. In 2026, Grindelwald Tourism lists it as open until early November. If snow or ice make the walkway unsafe, it can close earlier or open later.
In summer the canyon stays open until 8 pm, which makes it one of the few places you can still visit after the cable cars have stopped. Last entry is one hour before closing. Exact daily hours for each part of the 2026 season vary, so check at the entrance or with the tourist office before you plan an early morning or late visit.

How to get to the Glacier Canyon
The entrance is outside the village centre, but you can reach it easily by bus or on foot.
By bus 122
Bus 122 runs from Grindelwald station to the stop Gletscherschlucht in about 15 minutes. With the guest card the ride is free. This is the easiest option with small children or after a long hike.
On foot
From the village centre it is about a 30-minute walk to the entrance, on a flat route. If you are staying in the village, walking down and taking the bus back up is a relaxed combination.
By car
There are only a few paid parking spaces at the entrance. In high summer they fill up. Parking in the village or at the Grindelwald Terminal and taking the bus is usually less stressful.
Getting to Grindelwald →Combine with Pfingstegg
The Pfingstegg cable car also starts on the southern side of the village. A morning on the toboggan run and an afternoon in the canyon makes an easy family day without long gondola rides.
Pfingstegg →Tips for your visit
A few practical points that make the visit easier.
On a rainy day
When the peaks are in cloud, the gorge is one of the best options in Grindelwald, because the views up the mountain do not matter here. Bring a rain jacket and shoes with good grip, since the walkway can be wet.
With children
Children under 6 enter free, and the Spiderweb is the highlight for most kids. Keep younger children close on the walkway, and plan time on the net, as it is hard to get them off again.
Timing
The canyon is open later than the cable cars in summer. Use it as an evening plan after a day at First or Männlichen, and leave the mornings for the mountain.
Grindelwald First →Food and breaks
There is a restaurant at the canyon entrance. Inside the gorge there is nothing to buy, so take water with you on warm days.
More to see around Grindelwald
The canyon fills half a day. These places complete a trip.

Pfingstegg
A cable car of under five minutes to a summer toboggan run and trails towards the Lower Glacier.

Bachalpsee
The mountain lake above First, about an hour's walk each way on a wide path.
